Dress is Business Attire

Fred Barnes, TFAS trustee and senior columnist at the Washington Examiner, will present Tim Carney, Novak ’03, with the Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Outstanding Journalism. Carney is the commentary editor at the Washington Examiner and author of the best-selling new book, “Alienated America: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse.” His 2003 Novak Fellowship project, “Regulatory Robber Barons,” allowed him to write his first book, “The Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money” and launched Carney’s career as a respected journalists and commentator on economic competition, cronyism and American civil institutions.

Three people stand together
Robert Novak, the inspiration for the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship, meets with TFAS journalism students following a book signing and lecture.

The Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Outstanding Journalism was established in 2015 to recognize a journalist who has exhibited excellence in reporting and a determination to present the truth, often against tough odds.

The evening will also showcase an update from our 2018 Novak Fellowship Recipients and reflections on the life and legacy of Robert Novak.

Novak provided the inspiration for the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program in 1994 as a way to nurture a new generation of responsible journalists. Today, the Novak Program has awarded more than 140 fellowships to promising young journalists who are climbing the ranks as groundbreaking reporters, editors, editorial page writers, columnists and authors.
