Apply for a Rago Fellowship

Applications are now closed for the 2020-2021 Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism. Applications will open for the 2021-22 program in Winter 2020-21.

The Rago Fellowship is awarded annually to one rising journalist of outstanding character and ability to complete a nine-month internship with The Wall Street Journal’s editorial team. Recent college and journalism school graduates, and working journalists with less than five years of professional experience are welcome to apply. Applicants should have a commitment to pursuing a career in journalism and should already have some experience with writing or editing in a serious journalistic context, either in school or professionally. A demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines is critical for success. Applicants who are selected as finalists will be interviewed in person at The Wall Street Journal’s offices in New York City in March or April. The fellowship begins in September each year.

The application form requires the following information and materials:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume or CV
  • Three published writing samples
  • Short sample editorial
  • Brief personal essay

Additionally, we ask that you have one letter of reference from someone familiar with your writing sent to us directly via our reference form

Any materials you are unable to submit via the application form can be emailed to:
