TFAS Professor To Receive Prestigious Bradley Prize

//////////////////////

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in Milwaukee has announced that one of the four 2014 Bradley Prizes will be awarded to Randy E. Barnett, Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Legal Theory at the Georgetown University Law Center and founding director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution.

This summer Barnett will be the lead professor in the course offered to law students in TFAS’s Legal Studies Institute.The course is called Constitutional Interpretation: Originalism in Theory and Practice, and it will cover both the theory and practice of originalism as a method of constitutional interpretation. The course has an opening segment on originalism and its critics, and the proper role of judges in enforcing the original meaning of the Constitution. It then transitions to studying some originalist decisions and scholarship on particular issues, with an emphasis on how originalism is “best practiced” in a nonpartisan and nonideological way.

As part of the course students will visit the Supreme Court to discuss originalism with Justice Antonin Scalia.  Students will also attend a panel discussion with practitioners who seek to advance the judicial recognition of the original meaning of the Constitution.

Barnett will receive the Bradley Prize at a ceremony at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. Each award carries a stipend of $250,000.
