TFAS Professor Christopher Koopman was recently named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 for his noteworthy career in Law and Policy.
Along with being an outstanding TFAS faculty member, Koopman is a research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, where he is a scholar and serves as the program manager on the Project for the Study of American Capitalism.
At TFAS, Koopman teaches “The Economics of Regulation” to students in the Institute on Business and Government Affairs (IBGA) during our U.S. Summer Programs in Washington, D.C. Koopman co-teaches the course with Professor Matthew Mitchell, a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
In their course, students get an up-close, realistic look at the relationship between government and business. The course offers an overview of the complex and evolving relationship between individuals, markets and government in the United States. It also draws on the overlapping disciplines of economics, political science and public policy.
By using current, real-world examples, Koopman is able to bring these concepts to life. In a class evaluation, one of Koopman’s students, Nick Jones (IBGA 15), remarked,
“I thought it was really cool how the professors would respond to any question about a current industry and use really interesting examples to support the concepts we were reading. Koopman did a really good job of putting real life applications to everything we were reading about and it was really insightful.”
In addition to serving as a TFAS professor, Koopman shares his expertise and experience by giving his time as a guest lecturer to our alumni, supporters and staff at conferences and local D.C. receptions. This spring, Koopman will serve as the featured speaker for the TFAS Public Policy Fellows’ March monthly meeting. At the meeting, he will give an overview on the sharing economy, a lesson similar to the curriculum he teaches during his summer courses.
Koopman graduated with honors and received his Bachelor of Arts in American history from Hanover College in 2009. He received his J.D. from Ave Maria University and his LL.M. in law and economics at George Mason University. Koopman’s research interests include economic regulations, competition and innovation. His research has been used by state, federal and European governments to shape public policies in areas of occupational licensing, ridesharing and health care. His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Bloomberg, NPR and the Daily Beast, and he is a contributor at The Hill.
This summer, Koopman will begin his second year teaching students in the TFAS U.S. Summer Programs.
