Remembering Don Smith

//////////////////////

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Don Smith.

I really got to know Don just over a decade ago when we both served on the board of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE).

Don Smith, Art Laffer and I during a TFAS dinner in New York.

It was clear to me then that Don was a man of principle who understood the importance of integrity and character in a free society, which was reflected in his generous support of our work at The Fund for American Studies (TFAS).

Don had a wonderful sense of humor and a radiant smile. He cared deeply about passing along the values of a free society to the rising generation.

He also knew the importance of character education because he understood that integrity and freedom were linked together.

That’s why he supported our journalism programs in New York. He invested generously in young journalists’ education through his support of our Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship retreats. His involvement in the program led to him becoming the lead underwriter of our annual TFAS Journalism Awards Dinner in New York, where we introduce each year’s Novak fellows, pay tribute to the life of the late Joseph Rago and recognize the outstanding reporters who pave the way for the next generation of journalists.

Don is someone I have greatly admired, for his steadfast dedication to the cause of liberty and I will always be thankful to have known him as a friend and colleague.

He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
