The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) is searching for a self-starting, innovative and creative thinker to join its communications team as a spring intern. Our ideal candidate enjoys collaborating with a small team, listens intently to information and task direction, follows projects through to completion, takes personal pride in and ownership of their work, is excited and motivated to learn new skills, is resourceful and takes initiative to meet objectives.
The intern is responsible for providing creative, logistical and organizational support for TFAS. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience to contribute to innovative projects while supporting the efforts of a mission-driven nonprofit organization.
The role will commit to up to 30 hours per week from January to May and will report to the communications manager. The position is based in person in TFAS’s Washington, D.C., office and will be compensated with D.C.’s hourly minimum wage pay rate.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the digitization of historic materials, including scanning and file conversion of photos and videos
- Conduct research to support the description and contextualization of archival collections
- Assist with maintaining audio, video, photography and press archives
- Help create new and exciting content to share archived material via social media
- Attend TFAS student and supporter programs and events such as guest lectures, site briefings and panels, and gather content
- Provide research and logistical support key initiatives and events
Qualifications
- Pursuing a degree in marketing or related field, and/or seeking professional experience in marketing, communications or at a nonprofit organization.
- Ability to research topics and track down sources
- Willingness to work with a team as well as independently
- Ability to work on multiple projects while effectively managing timelines and expectations and following projects through to completion
- Willingness to learn new technologies
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with digital preservation and best practices
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Familiarity or willingness to learn AP Style
- Familiarity or willingness to learn WordPress or other content management systems
- Familiarity or willingness to learn Microsoft Office Suite
