TFAS is pleased to present Benjamin Hall with the 2023 Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Courageous Journalism. Hall currently serves as a correspondent for Fox News Channel (FNC). In March of 2022, while covering the war in Ukraine, Hall was catastrophically wounded when his team was struck by incoming fire outside Kyiv.

Tragically, his colleagues Pierre Zakrzewski and Oleksandra “Sasha” Kuvshynova were killed in the attack. Hall is the author of the book “SAVED: A War Reporter’s Mission to Make It Home,” which was published on March 14, 2023. The book details the story of his survival, his dramatic rescue along with his arduous and ongoing recovery.

Lucas Y. Tomlinson, son of the award’s namesake, will present the award to Hall. Tomlinson serves as a correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC) based in Washington, D.C.

Tomlinson recently contributed to FNC’s live coverage surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, providing 24/7 coverage live on the ground in Ukraine. In August of 2021, he contributed to the network’s coverage surrounding the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. He also extensively covered the suicide bombing outside Abbey Gate at Kabul’s airport in Afghanistan as the news was rapidly unfolding on what would be one the deadliest day for American troops in 10 years.

While serving in his former role as a Pentagon producer, Tomlinson reported daily from the Pentagon, where he attended press conferences and presented on-camera questions to senior military leaders on a range of breaking news throughout the military.

Tomlinson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2001. Before joining FNC in 2012, he served aboard USS McInerney and later on a human terrain team with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team 10th Mountain Division in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Brian C. Anderson, editor of City Journal, the cultural and political quarterly published by the Manhattan Institute, will be presented with the 2023 Thomas L. Phillips Career Achievement Award for his remarkable career. Formerly, he was senior editor of City Journal and a research associate at the American Enterprise Institute.

As editor, Anderson has overseen the enormously successful expansion of City Journal’s website, which now reaches millions of readers. His guidance has broadened City Journal’s influence, with the addition of many new authors and regular contributors. In his years editing City Journal, the magazine has continued to be one of the nation’s premier public-policy magazines.

Lindsay Young Craig, National Review Institute president, will present the award to Anderson. Under Craig’s leadership, NRI has established sound fiscal footing, even as NRI has become the parent company for NR, Inc., significantly expanded and enhanced its existing programs while establishing new ones, and broadened its partnerships with policy organizations and policymakers across the country. She remains active in the broader conservative movement, organizing events, serving on advisory boards, and speaking at conferences. Lindsay serves on the Board of Trustees for The Fund for American Studies and on the Board of Directors for Young Voices.

Prior to joining NRI in August of 2013, Lindsay spent 16 years at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, one of the country’s leading domestic policy think tanks. As vice president of communications and marketing, she oversaw the development of the public relations department, social media and web development, and strategic marketing. In addition to her communications department duties, Lindsay spearheaded numerous other Manhattan Institute projects—leading special initiatives such as launching the Young Leaders Circle, organizing major conferences, and overseeing MI’s internship program.

A Connecticut native, Lindsay lived in New York City for over 30 years, after she moved there to study photography and graphic design at School of Visual Arts with a focus on political art. She graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in politics. She lives just outside New York City with her husband and young daughter.

The evening will also honor the life and legacy of Joseph Rago, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal, who died in 2017 at the age of 34.

In memory of Joe, TFAS and the Rago family established the Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism, providing a nine-month internship with The Wall Street Journal’s editorial team. Sierra McClain will accept the 2023 Rago Fellowship at the dinner.

TFAS will present the 2023 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Awards to the next generation of top writers.

By providing essential support and an extensive network of alumni, the Novak Fellowship gives promising journalists the resources to undertake career-building and impactful projects. Named in honor of renowned columnist Robert D. Novak, the program has funded more than 150 journalists since its founding.
