TFAS supporters, friends and local alumni are invited to join TFAS for a forum and keynote luncheon discussion featuring Daniel Hannan, Lord of Kingsclere, on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at the Naples Yacht Club. Lord Daniel Hannan, TFAS America 250 Visiting Fellow, member of the U.K. House of Lords and author of “Inventing Freedom,” will deliver the keynote address on “250 Years of Freedom: What the American Tradition Means to the World.” The forum will also feature two panels on the state of civic knowledge in America and how organizations like TFAS are working to address the issue.

This event is part of The Fund for American Studies 2026 Regional Conferences, Developing Courageous Citizens: Revitalizing Civic Education and America’s Founding Principles, a series of forums held around the country to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Join leaders, scholars, students and alumni as we showcase how TFAS programs can build a pipeline of courageous citizens to carry forward the American experiment.

Daniel Hannan

Lord Hannan of Kingsclere is the TFAS America 250 Visiting Fellow and member of the U.K. House of Lords. An author and columnist, he serves as International Secretary of the Conservative Party, as well as teaching at the University of Buckingham and the University of Francisco Marroquín. He has written nine books, including the New York Times bestseller “Inventing Freedom: How the English-Speaking Peoples Made the Modern World.” He sat as a Conservative Member of the European Parliament for 21 years and was a founder of Vote Leave. He is a regular columnist for, among others, The Sunday Telegraph, The Washington Examiner and The Daily Mail. Lord Hannan is President of the Institute for Free Trade.

Matthew Spalding

Matthew Spalding is the Kirby Professor in Constitutional Government and Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College and oversees the Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship at Hillsdale’s Washington, D.C. campus. His new book, The Making of the American Mind: The Making of Our Declaration of Independence, was released in December 2025.

Spalding is also the best-selling author of We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future and the original executive editor of The Heritage Guide to the Constitution, the first line-by-line analysis of each clause of the U.S. Constitution. Appointed executive director of the President’s Advisory 1776 Commission, which produced The 1776 Report, he is currently a senior academic advisor for America250 projects.

Prior to joining Hillsdale, Spalding was vice president for American Studies at The Heritage Foundation and founding director of its B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics. He is a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy and serves on the boards of The Steamboat Institute, Faith & Law, the James Wilson Institute, and New College of Florida.

He received his BA from Claremont McKenna College and his MA and PhD from the Claremont Graduate School.

Samuel Goldman

Dr. Samuel Goldman teaches American Political Thought for TFAS Academic Internship Programs in Washington, D.C.

He is executive director of the Loeb Institute for Religious Freedom and Democracy and director of the Politics & Values Program at George Washington University. His first book, “God’s Country: Christian Zionism in America,” was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2018. His second book, “After Nationalism,” was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in early 2021. In addition to his academic research, Goldman’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications.

Natalia Lopez

Natalia Lopez is a fourth year Political Science and Economics student from Miami, Florida. A John V. Lombardi Scholar at the University of Florida, Natalia is the founder of the student-run publication The Florida Finibus, president of the UF Alexander Hamilton Society, a member of the Business Ethics Case Competition Travel Team, and an alumna of the Hamilton School Society of Fellows. She completed the Hudson Institute Political Studies program in 2024 and has interned with the House China Select Committee and Hudson Institute.
