Applications Now Open for 2020-21 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowships

The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) is now accepting applications for the 2020-21 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program. This prestigious fellowship awards up to $75,000 for journalists to undertake enterprising and ground-breaking writing projects that are broadly supportive of the principles of a free society. Fellowship recipients spend a year researching and writing on a topic of their choosing. Print and online journalists with less than 10 years’ professional experience are eligible to apply. The application deadline is April 6, 2020.

Novak Fellowship Tiers

There are three tiers to the program:

  • Fellowships provide up to $35,000 in grant money and expense assistance.
  • Full Fellowships, which require that recipients devote their full-time efforts to their project, provide up to $75,000.
  • Alumni Fund Fellowships, supported by donations from Novak Fellows past and present, provide support for recipients to write one in-depth, major essay on their topic.

Applicants for full and part-time fellowships are automatically considered for Alumni Fund Fellowships. No separate application process is required.

About the Novak Fellowships

For more than 25 years, the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program has nurtured new generations of serious and enterprising journalists, including Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, editors of national magazines and authors of best-selling books. By providing essential funding and an extensive network of alumni, Novak Fellowships provide promising journalists the resources to undertake career-building and impactful projects.

It helped me get placed in national publications and put me in contact with other fellows who answered my questions and helped me learn the ropes.”

The fellowships are named in honor of Robert D. Novak, longtime columnist, CNN broadcaster and reporter for the Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal. Since its founding, the program has funded more than 140 journalists. Novak Fellows include Tim Alberta, Novak ’18, best-selling author and chief political correspondent for POLITICO; Katherine Mangu-Ward, Novak ’05, editor-in-chief of Reason; and Matthew Continetti, Novak ’08, founding editor of the Washington Free Beacon and resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
