There are three tiers to the program:

  • Fellowships provide up to $35,000 in grant money and expense assistance.
  • Full Fellowships, which require that recipients devote their full-time efforts to their project, provide up to $75,000.

About the Novak Fellowships

For more than 25 years, the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program has nurtured new generations of serious and enterprising journalists, including Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, editors of national magazines and authors of best-selling books. By providing essential funding and an extensive network of alumni, Novak Fellowships provide promising journalists the resources to undertake career-building and impactful projects.

“I can’t imagine how different my career would be without the Novak Fellowship,” said best-selling author, Fox News contributor and senior editor for The Federalist Mollie Hemingway, Novak ’04. “It enabled me to take a year of in-depth study and become knowledgeable on my beat. It helped me get placed in national publications and put me in contact with other fellows who answered my questions and helped me learn the ropes.”

The fellowships are named in honor of Robert D. Novak, longtime columnist, CNN broadcaster and reporter for the Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal. Since its founding, the program has funded more than 140 journalists. Novak Fellows include Tim Alberta, Novak ’18, best-selling author and chief political correspondent for POLITICO; Katherine Mangu-Ward, Novak ’05, editor-in-chief of Reason; and Matthew Continetti, Novak ’08, founding editor of the Washington Free Beacon and resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
