The Fund for American Studies Remembers a Stalwart Defender of Freedom and Justice

The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) mourns the loss of David Rivkin, a distinguished attorney and passionate advocate for freedom, whose life and legacy have left an indelible mark on our organization and those dedicated to constitutional values and excellence in journalism.

David contributed significantly to TFAS, including as dedicated supporter and a dinner committee member and sponsor of our annual Journalism Awards Dinners, where he spearheaded support for the Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowships for Excellence in Journalism.

He also served as as a guest lecturer to TFAS students and supporters, sharing a memorable Lev Dobriansky Lecture on Political Economy in 2015. Named after the founding director of TFAS’s Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems, the Dobriansky Lecture series features esteemed scholars to engage students in discussions on political economy. Rivkin’s lecture underscored his deep understanding of constitutional law and his unwavering commitment to a freer and safer world.

His legal expertise was instrumental in the establishment of the Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism. As the attorney negotiating the agreement between TFAS and the Rago family, Rivkin played a crucial role in ensuring the fellowship would honor the legacy of the late journalist by supporting emerging talents in the field of journalism.

Ambassador Paula J. Dobriansky, daughter of Lev Dobriansky, TFAS trustee, and Rivkin’s lifelong friend, delivered a poignant tribute during his funeral mass, capturing the essence of his remarkable journey and character.

“His life truly exemplified the American Dream,” she shared. “When he first came to the U.S., he worked tirelessly in five jobs all at the same time. … Despite countless hardships, David excelled and overcame adversity. He graduated from Georgetown University, and later from Columbia Law School, becoming an influential voice on complex national security issues.”

Rivkin speaks with TFAS Trustee Peter McPherson during the 2018 TFAS Journalism Awards Dinner.

Rivkin’s journey from a young emigrant from the Soviet Union to a celebrated lawyer and policy expert embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication. His work spanned multiple disciplines, from constitutional law to foreign policy, and he was known for his eloquence and distinctive style, earning admiration from figures such as former President George W. Bush, who once remarked on his “sartorial splendor.”

In her heartfelt reflection, Ambassador Dobriansky encapsulated Rivkin’s legacy:

“Through his writings, legal defense, advocacy of the Constitution, and foreign policy positions, David made an indelible mark on not only our lives but that of future generations. David’s critical work and legacy will live on.”

TFAS is profoundly grateful for David Rivkin’s contributions and the lasting impact he has had on our mission and the world. His legacy will continue to inspire those who value freedom, justice and excellence.
