The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) mourns the passing of Richard (Dick) Carlson, a dedicated journalist, public servant, and former TFAS Board of Trustees member from 1988 to 1990. He was 84.
Dick Carlson exemplified the spirit of the American project—fiercely defending its values while fostering friendships across ideological divides. As a leader of the Voice of America, ambassador and commentator, he championed freedom, truth, and the principles that TFAS works to instill in future generations.
“Dick Carlson was a bear of a man, one you wanted to give a big hug to in appreciation of his full-throttled voice on what was right about the American project,” TFAS Chairman Randal Teague reflected. “Despite his expansive personality, one embodying confidence in the rightness of his values and the intellect and experience to defend them, he made friends on both sides of ideological aisles. He believed a person should get chill bumps when they hear ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ ‘God Bless America,’ ‘America the Beautiful,’ and ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic.’ His support for TFAS’s mission and programs was much appreciated.”
TFAS honors Richard Carlson’s legacy of service, integrity, and unwavering belief in the power of American ideals. His contributions will continue to inspire generations of students and leaders who carry forward the work he championed.
