For decades, The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) has been shaping future leaders, fostering intellectual curiosity, and igniting a passion for liberty and leadership. For some students and alumni, TFAS provides something even more unexpected—lifelong love.
A TFAS summer in D.C. was just the beginning of a lifelong journey for Sally Song ’06, ’07 and David Wu ’07. These alumni not only gained valuable experience through TFAS, but also found love. They are not alone. Over the years, multiple alumni have met their partners through TFAS.
Sally and David met during The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) D.C. Academic Internship Program in 2007, back when the first iPhone had just launched, and posting on Facebook was still considered the height of cool. They both hail from Beijing, China. David moved to Michigan with his family when he was 10 years old.
Sally participated in TFAS Hong Kong in 2006 before attending TFAS D.C. Academic Internship Program in 2007. That year, Sally and David both participated in the Public Policy + Economics track at TFAS and attended the same classes.
The couple fondly recalled David’s pickup line as, “I have this coupon for a restaurant on M Street. Want to go?” Sally said, “I was almost immediately won over by his humor. David is probably still one of the funniest people I know.”
The couple took what they learned in the TFAS program and both became attorneys. Sally now works and teaches at Georgetown Law School. David had worked in private practice and now works in his family business. Married in 2015, the couple moved to Seattle before eventually settling outside Washington, D.C., where they now live with their son.
Sally and David are among the more than 100 TFAS alumni couples who have formed over the years, and the number just keeps growing. Click the cards below to read our past features of TFAS Alumni Love Stories.
