Following China’s admittance into the World Trade Organization, TFAS established the Asia Institute for Political Economy (AIPE) in 2001. Held in partnership with the University of Hong Kong, the AIPE program promotes the principles of economic opportunity, freedom and individual responsibility in Asia, and fosters a greater understanding of the American system of government.
Approximately 65 outstanding university students from Asia join select American students to study political and economic principles and how those ideas relate to development and trade. AIPE professors bring these concepts to life by incorporating small group debates and trade simulation activities into their interdisciplinary course, accredited through George Mason University.
AIPE was a learning experience for me through the theories of Locke, Hume, Tocqueville, the American Constitution, Austrian model of economics and public choice economics … The extent to which my knowledge increased in these three weeks surpasses all the things that I have learned in my entire life. – Kranti Pageni (AIPE 15), Nepal
