TFAS Launches Future of Freedom Initiative to Revitalize Curriculum on Fusionism

The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) is pleased to announce the reinvigoration and revitalization of curriculum for its Continuing Education Programs through its new Future of Freedom Initiative.

In conjunction with a grant from the John William Pope Foundation, TFAS will engage current and emerging leaders in broad and thoughtful discussion and collaboration about how to advance the principles of freedom and the Western rule-of-law tradition.

A portion of the grant will go toward revitalizing the TFAS Public Policy Fellowship. Fellows will explore post-war conservative thought and how thinkers like F.A. Hayek, Russell Kirk and Frank Meyer attempted to resolve the tensions between freedom and order in public policy.

The John William Pope Foundation supports nonprofit public policy work that defends the American tradition of a free-market economy under the rule of law. The Foundation’s Future of Freedom Initiative, established this year, is a targeted program that seeks to refresh, rebuild and revitalize American conservatism with grants that invest in projects and institutions exhibiting inclusion, integrity, innovation and influence.

Leading this initiative for TFAS is Senior Scholar Dr. Donald Devine, a prominent scholar of the philosophy known as fusionism and author of 10 books, including his most recent, “The Enduring Tension: Capitalism and the Moral Order.” Fusionism is a political philosophy of synthesis, blending both freedom and tradition in a complementary manner to achieve a free, prosperous and good society.

“With this grant, TFAS will cultivate and enhance our work to develop courageous leaders for liberty,” said Steve Slattery, TFAS COO and executive vice president. “The overall goal is to invigorate, create thoughtful and provocative content, and increase collaboration for leaders in public policy in order to advance freedom.”

Through the Future of Freedom Luncheon Forum, TFAS will engage current and emerging leaders of the conservative and libertarian movements in broad and thoughtful discussion and collaboration about how to advance the principles of freedom and the Western rule-of-law tradition.

Funding from the Future of Freedom grant will go in part toward reinvigorating TFAS’s Public Policy Fellowship program, a year-long networking and educational program designed to develop young leaders with a shared commitment to improving public policy; a monthly Future of Freedom Luncheon Forum for D.C.-based leaders; and a Freedom and Tradition online library.

The grant will also be used to support the Frank Meyer Society  dinner discussion programs and continue the Fusionist Roundtable dinners held with an intimate group of intellectuals spanning the conservative and libertarian movements, encouraging high level conversations and vigorous debate to come together to further clarify the true principles of freedom and order. These programs bring together policy leaders for collaborative discussion on traditionalist and libertarian philosophy.

“TFAS remains steadfastly grateful to the John William Pope Foundation for this important initiative, in addition to our longstanding partnership,” TFAS President Roger Ream ’76 said.
