TFAS is searching for outstanding print and electronic journalists with less than 10 years of professional experience to apply for our 2017-18 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowships. This prestigious year-long program awards $75,000 full-time fellowships and $35,000 part-time fellowships for writing projects committed to advancing constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free-enterprise system.

Submitted projects should be both original and publishable. Full-time and part-time award winners will deliver four quarterly writing installments with the potential to be published sequentially or as a book. There are also Alumni Fund Fellowships funded by donations from former and current Novak Fellows. Alumni Fund Fellowship winners write one magazine-length article on their topic.

I would not have gotten my current job – where I’ve worked happily for more than a decade – without the generous support of Tom Phillips and the Novak Fellowship Program. My job with the Weekly Standard has, in turn, opened several other doors for me, including the opportunity to write two books and contributor positions at both CNN and Fox News. It is no exaggeration to say that all of this happened – directly and indirectly – because of the part-time fellowship I received.”
– Steve Hayes (Novak 00), The Weekly Standard

TFAS awarded six Novak fellowships in 2016:

Part-time Fellowship Award Recipients

  • Elizabeth Corey for “Diversity and Individuality in the Modern University.”
  • Erin Mundahl for “Pipe Dreams: America’s Shifting Attitudes Towards Addiction.”
  • Stephanie Slade for “The Politics of Religious Liberty: How the Left is Driving a Wedge Between Faith and Free Enterprise.”
  • Matthew Walther for “They Couldn’t Have Done the Math!: What the Decline of the WASP Establishment and the Rise of Meritocracy Means for American Institutions.”
  • Jonathan “Yoni” Wilkenfeld for “Long Gone: Civil Asset Forfeiture in the 21st Century.”

Alumni Fund Fellowship Award Recipient

  • Joshua Peterson for “Will Robots Want to Vote? An Investigation into the Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Liberty and Democracy.”

The Novak program has awarded 135 fellowships over the past two decades to promising young journalists who are climbing the ranks as groundbreaking reporters, editors, editorial page writers, columnists and authors. Novak Fellows include Steve Hayes (AIPES 94, Novak 00) of The Weekly Standard and Fox News, Mollie Hemingway (Novak 04) of The Federalist and Fox News, Tim Carney (Novak 03) of the Washington Examiner and Katherine Mangu-Ward (Novak 05) of Reason.

Applications for the 2017-18 Novak Program must be postmarked by Feb. 13, 2017. The winners will be announced next May at an awards dinner at the National Press Club in Washington. The starting date for the fellowships is Sept. 1, 2017.  Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
