TFAS Liberty + The Future Alumni Lecture – Venezuela…My Story, Your Future?

April 18, 2023

Harvard Club of New York City

35 West 44th Street, New York, NY, USA

//////////////////////

TFAS Outreach Fellow Jorge Galicia was forced to leave his native Venezuela more than three years ago, after an oppressive regime crippled the economy, caused widespread starvation, blanketed the nations in blackouts, and silenced and jailed those who dared to speak out and criticize the government.

At this exclusive TFAS event, Jorge will share his eyewitness perspective about how a country with so much wealth and promise is now in complete collapse.

Before the destruction of Venezuela, Jorge lived a life not unlike that of middle-class Americans. But now, he is one of more than 7 million Venezuelans forced to flee their country following the economic, political and social collapse caused by the political regime. Today, he lives in the U.S. and travels to speak out about the truth of what happened and is happening in his country and share his story with the world.

ABOUT THE SERIES

The “Liberty + the Future: NYC Alumni Lecture Series” is an exclusive opportunity for TFAS alumni and friends in the New York area to think critically about the ideas and issues that impact a free society while connecting with fellow alumni leaders who are passionate about creating a brighter and more prosperous future.

Each event features liberty thought leaders to speak on issues related to free enterprise, economic and political liberty, limited government and individual responsibility. Each lecture is followed by a reception, allowing attendees to continue the discussion and network with fellow alumni peer leaders in the New York area.

This series is made possible through the generosity of the Achelis and Bodman Foundation. Their gift, made in support of our 50th Anniversary Campaign initiative to engage and mobilize the global TFAS alumni network, allows alumni leaders to continue their education in liberty.

TFAS is more than just a standalone program, it’s a journey with academic opportunities available from high school all the way through to the professional level. We know that TFAS alumni grow into influential leaders who think critically about the world around them and seek opportunities to grow and expand both their networks and knowledge so that they can have a greater impact on society.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

JORGE GALICIA

Christian, lawyer and freedom fighter – these are the words that define Jorge’s life. Before socialism devastated his country, Jorge lived a life not unlike that of middle-class Americans. But now, he is one of 4 million Venezuelans who have fled their country following its economic, social and political collapse. Now TFAS is sending him on a campus tour across the United States to share his eyewitness perspective of how a country with so much wealth and promise completely collapsed.

Living under socialist tyranny showed Jorge the dangers of letting the State grow. From a very young age, he has been speaking out about the very real damages caused by socialism and has made it his life’s mission to win the fight. He was a member of Estudiantes por la Libertad (Students For Liberty Latin America), serving as a coordinator from 2015-16 and a senior leader from 2016-17. Today, he travels to college campuses as a TFAS speaker, sharing his cautionary tale about the dangers of socialism.
