TFAS Alumnus Stephen Hayes Named Editor-in-Chief of The Weekly Standard

The Weekly Standard has named TFAS trustee and two-time alumnus, Stephen Hayes (AIPES 94, Novak 00), as its new editor-in-chief.

Hayes currently serves as the publication’s senior editor, and will assume the role from Bill Kristol, who co-founded the magazine in 1995 with TFAS Trustee Fred Barnes. Kristol will transition to a new role as editor-at-large, and Barnes will remain executive editor.

Hayes has a long history with TFAS as an alumnus, staff member, trustee and supporter. He attended the American Institute on Political and Economic Systems (AIPES) in the Czech Republic and served as director of the TFAS Institute on Political Journalism (IPJ) for six years. He was also a recipient of a TFAS Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship in 2000.

In addition to his work with The Weekly Standard, Hayes is a regular Fox News All Stars panelist on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” He is the author of two New York Times bestsellers: “Cheney: The Untold Story of America’s Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President” and “The Connection: How al Qaeda’s Collaboration with Saddam Hussein Has Endangered America.”

Hayes has credited his TFAS experience with helping launch his successful journalism career.

“I would not have gotten my current job – where I’ve worked happily for more than a decade – without the Novak Fellowship Program,” said Hayes. “My job with The Weekly Standard has, in turn, opened several other doors for me, including the opportunity to write two books and contributor positions at both CNN and Fox News. It is no exaggeration to say that all of this happened – directly and indirectly – because of the part-time fellowship I received.”

In addition to his service on the TFAS Board of Trustees, Hayes gives back to TFAS by advising as a member of our journalism board of visitors, providing scholarship support to TFAS students and speaking at TFAS conferences and supporter events.

Hayes is one of 16,000 TFAS alumni who are forging careers in journalism, politics, government, public policy, business and philanthropy. TFAS programs inspire these leaders to make a difference in their communities and throughout the world by upholding the values essential to the preservation and success of a free society.
