The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) is pleased to announce a new alumni lecture series coming to New York City in 2020. The “Liberty + the Future: NYC Alumni Lecture Series” is an exclusive opportunity for TFAS alumni and friends to think critically about the ideas and issues that impact a free society while connecting with fellow alumni leaders who are passionate about creating a brighter and more prosperous future.
Each quarterly event will feature two liberty thought leaders to speak on issues related to free enterprise, economic and political liberty, limited government and individual responsibility. Speakers’ remarks will be followed by a reception, allowing attendees to continue the discussion and network with fellow alumni peer leaders in the greater New York City area.
Professor Brian Brenberg, executive vice president and chair of the business and finance program at The King’s College, will kick off our inaugural lecture at the Harvard Club on Jan. 23 with a talk on “Socialism, Economic Liberty and the Power of Storytelling.” Brenberg will share how storytelling has been pivotal to the appeal of socialism and why better stories and better storytellers are key to defending economic liberty.
The series is made possible through the generosity of the Achelis and Bodman Foundation. Their gift, made in support of our campaign initiative to engage and mobilize the global TFAS alumni network, allows alumni leaders to continue their education in liberty.
“At TFAS, we pride ourselves on offering both socially engaging and intellectually stimulating events for our alumni,” said Vice President of Alumni Affairs Michelle Le ’95, ’96. “We know that TFAS alumni grow into influential leaders who think critically about the world around them. This series will provide another opportunity for these alumni leaders to expand both their networks and knowledge so they can have a greater impact on society.”
TFAS alumnus and Trustee John Lee ’85, senior managing director at Northern Trust in New York, has been instrumental in helping TFAS plan the new series.
“This is an exciting platform to bring together all those with a common bond to TFAS across the greater New York area,” said Lee. “We expect to attract a diverse group of TFAS alumni, as well as supporters and friends, to learn from our speakers and, importantly, from each other. Each lecture will offer ample time for both professional and social networking. Greater New York is full of active members of the TFAS network and we look forward to connecting and engaging this group.”
