Presenting the 2025 Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Courageous Journalism

TFAS will present John Tierney, contributing editor to City Journal, with the Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Courageous Journalism for his excellence in reporting and determination to present the truth. He spent two decades at The New York Times as a reporter, columnist and magazine writer.

John Tierney is a journalist and bestselling author. He is a contributing editor to City Journal, a former columnist at the New York Times, and has written for dozens of magazines and newspapers. His reporting has taken him to all seven continents, and his books have been translated into more than 20 languages.

During more than two decades at the New York Times, he was a science columnist, an Op-Ed columnist and a staff writer for the Times Magazine. He wrote about New York in a column, “The Big City,” which ran in the Times Magazine and in the Metro section.

Together with the social psychologist Roy Baumeister, he wrote a New York Times best-seller titled, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength.  The psychologist Steven Pinker, writing in the New York Times Book Review, called it “an immensely rewarding book, filled with ingenious research, wise advice and insightful reflections on the human condition.”

His latest book, also co-authored with Roy Baumeister, is The Power of Bad: How the Negativity Effect Rules Us and How We Can Rule It. It has been praised by P.J. O’Rourke as “the best bad news ever,” and described by Martin Seligman, the eminent psychologist, as “the most important book at the borderland of psychology and politics that I have ever read.”

Tierney is the author of a humor book, The Best-Case Scenario Handbook, which explains, among other things, how to deal with a broken ATM spewing cash and how to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also the co-author, with Christopher Buckley, of a novel parodying self-help books, God Is My Broker: A Monk Tycoon Reveals the 7 ½ Laws of Spiritual and Financial Growth.

Christopher Buckley will present the award to Tierney. Buckley is the author of 20 books. Among his best sellers are: “Steaming to Bamboola,” “The White House Mess,” “Thank You for Smoking,” “Boomsday and “Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir.” His books have been translated into 16 foreign languages. “Thank You for Smoking” was adapted for the screen in 2006.

After a stint in the merchant marine, graduated from Yale University with honors, he became managing editor of Esquire magazine at 24 and served as chief speechwriter to Vice President George H.W. Bush (1981-82). He is the founding editor of Forbes FYI magazine (1989-2007). His journalism, essays and criticism have been widely published, a portion of which are collected in Wry Martinis and But Enough About You. He has lectured in over 70 cities around the world. His awards include the Thurber Prize for American Humor and the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence.

Presenting the 2025 Thomas L. Phillips Career Achievement Award

Mary Anastasia O’Grady will be presented with the 2025 Thomas L. Phillips Career Achievement Award. O’Grady writes The Wall Street Journal’s weekly “Americas” column and is a member of the Journal’s editorial board.

Ms. O’Grady received a bachelor’s degree in English from Assumption College, an M.B.A. in financial management from Pace University and an honorary doctorate from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala City.

His weekly column, “Wonder Land,” appeared in the Journal on Thursdays. In 2004, he won the Eric Breindel Journalism Award for his weekly column. He has won the Gerald Loeb Award for commentary, the Scripps Howard Foundation’s Walker Stone Award for editorial writing and the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for editorial writing. Presenting the 2025 Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowships for Excellence in Journalism

Kate Farmer, Cole Murphy and Suzanna Murawski have been selected as the 2025 Joseph Rago Memorial Fellows for Excellence in Journalism.

The evening will also honor the life and legacy of Joseph Rago, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal, who died in 2017 at the age of 34.

In memory of Joe, TFAS and the Rago family established the Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism, providing a nine-month internship with The Wall Street Journal’s editorial team.
