Presenting the 2024 Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Courageous Journalism

TFAS is pleased to present James Bennet, Lexington columnist and a senior editor at The Economist; former editorial page editor of The New York Times; and former editor-in-chief of The Atlantic with the 2024 Kenneth Y. Tomlinson Award for Courageous Journalism.

James Bennet is a senior editor and the weekly Lexington columnist at The Economist. He was previously the editorial page editor of The New York Times, where he oversaw the digital transformation of the paper’s opinion department and led it to two Pulitzer prizes in four years, its first in more than a decade. Before joining the Times, Mr. Bennet was the editor in chief and co-president of The Atlantic. Under Mr. Bennet, named editor in 2006, The Atlantic substantially increased its audience and editorial impact while returning to profitability for the first time in many years. He is a past president of the American Society of Magazine Editors and past member of the board of the Columbia Journalism Review. Before joining The Atlantic, Mr. Bennet worked for the Times for 15 years in several reporting roles, including Jerusalem bureau chief, White House correspondent and Detroit bureau chief. He also served as staff writer for the Sunday Times magazine. He was previously an editor of The Washington Monthly.

James (Jim) Dao will present the award to Bennet. Dao is the editorial page editor of The Boston Globe, overseeing editorials, op-eds, letters, and the Ideas section. Since he joined the Globe in July 2022, the section has expanded its newsletter offerings, created a new podcast, “Say More,” and pushed to elevate its digital content. Before the Globe, he spent 30 years at The New York Times where, as a reporter, he wrote about state and national politics, roamed the country as a national correspondent, covered the State and Defense departments, created a beat on veterans affairs, and embedded with American troops during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Presenting the 2024 Thomas L. Phillips Career Achievement Award

TFAS is pleased to present Lance Morrow, contributing columnist at The Wall Street Journal and former TIME magazine editor and essayist, with the 2024 Thomas L. Phillips Career Achievement Award.

Lance Morrow, whose essays appear in the Wall Street Journal and City Journal, is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. For some forty years, he was a writer, editor and essayist at TIME, where he won two National Magazine Awards and was a finalist for a third. A 1963 graduate of Harvard, he is the author of ten books, including two collections of his essays and a critically acclaimed memoir, The ChiefWilliam F. Buckley Jr. described him as “one of the two or three best writers in America.”

Raised in Washington D.C., the son of two magazine journalists, Morrow was a reporter for the Washington Star before joining the staff of TIME in 1965. He lives on a farm in upstate New York with his wife, the author Susan Brind Morrow, and has two sons, James—a newspaper and television journalist in Sydney, Australia, and Justin, a writer in New York.

Paul Gigot will present the award to Morrow. Paul Gigot is the editorial page editor and vice president of The Wall Street Journal, a position he has held since September 2001.
