TFAS Announces The Richard G. Lugar Scholarship Fund

TFAS is pleased to announce the Richard G. Lugar Scholarship Fund. Established in honor of the late U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, the scholarship will provide financial support for deserving college students with strong leadership potential to attend TFAS academic internship programs in Washington, D.C.

Sen. Lugar was a champion of TFAS for three decades and a tireless advocate for engagement and civic leadership at the local, national and international levels for his entire life.” – Susan Hyre, Founding Director of TFAS Business + Government Relations Program

Sen. Lugar, who passed away this April, was a bipartisan powerhouse on foreign policy and a shining example of leadership. We were honored to bestow him with our inaugural Congressional Leadership Award in 1989 and again in 2010 for his dedication to developing future leaders.

Former TFAS employee and friend of the Lugar family, Susan Hyre, announced the Lugar Scholarship at the 30th Annual TFAS Scholarship Dinner in Washington, D.C. on July 17, 2019.

Susan Hyre was the founding director of our Business and Government Relations program and was responsible for choosing Sen. Lugar as our inaugural TFAS Congressional Leadership Award recipient in 1989. When the program and annual awards dinner celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010, Sen. Lugar was again honored by TFAS for an additional 20 years of faithful service to his Indiana constituents, all of his Senate colleagues, the nation and the world.

Sen. Lugar was the honoree at the inaugural TFAS Scholarship Dinner in 1989 where students lined up to meet him.

“Sen. Lugar was a champion of TFAS for three decades and a tireless advocate for engagement and civic leadership at the local, national and international levels for his entire life,” said Hyre. “Choosing Sen. Lugar was not difficult because he believed in the principles of limited government, free-market economics and honorable leadership. He was also deeply devoted to educating and mentoring the next generation of leaders, just like The Fund for American Studies.”

The Richard G. Lugar Scholarship will help deserving students become honorable leaders – leaders who make a difference in their communities and throughout the world, just like Sen. Lugar did, by upholding the values necessary to the preservation of a free society. Preference for the scholarship will be given to students from Sen. Lugar’s state of Indiana.
